Family History

William Larwood was born in 1899 the son of Philip a coal miner contractor and Annie Larwood née Sharman and the brother of Arthur and Wilfred Larwood. In 1911 they lived at 38 Fishers Street Nuncargate Nottinghamshire. Phillip was born in 1875 and Annie Sharman was born in 1878 both were born in Kirkby in Ashfield, married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 5 children 2 died in infancy or early childhood. William's pension record card shows a second dependent, Annie Ball of 2 Pearson Street, Dunkinfield, who was the mother of his illegitimate child.

Military History

Private William Larwood attested on 24th February 1916 at Mansfield giving his age as 17 yrs and 90 days, he was a clerk, his next of kin was his father Phillip he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 8th November 1916 and posted to the Durham Light Infantry. He landed in France on 30th January 1918 and went missing in action on 21st March 1918 and later confirmed as killed in action on this date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial

Extra Information

He was the cousin of Harold Larwood (1904-1995) the great Nottinghamshire and England fast bowler who played a prominent and controversial role in the 1932-33 'Bodyline' Ashes series in Australia.
