Family History

John Davies was born in 1892 the son of the late Philip Davies a licensed victualler and Esther Davies née Fletcher. Philip Davies was born in 1850 at Wanbridge, Shropshire he died in 1905 aged 55 yrs, Esther Fletcher was born in in 1849 at Dawley Green, Shropshire, married on 20th March 1870 at Holy Trinity Church Dawley Magna, Shropshire they went on to have 11 children. Following his fathers death his mother re married in 1907 to Samuel Shaw, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. In 1911 John Davies 19 yrs a grocers assistant is at 88 New Annesley and is living with his stepfather Samuel Shaw 62 yrs a coal miner and his mother Esther Shaw 62 yrs, also living at the address is John Charles Shaw 18 yrs a drapers assistant. On the census return for 1911 his step father Samuel states he has been married to his wife Esther for 3 yrs and they have had no children.

Military History

Private John Davies enlisted on 1st November 1915 at Nottingham giving his age as 23 yrs and 11 months, he was a grocers assistant. Posted to the Royal Army Medical Corp whom he joined at Sheffield on 5th November. He embarked from Southampton on 11th July 1916 disembarking at Rouen the following day. Posted on 18th July 1916 to the 4th Field Ambulance he was killed in action on 29th December 1916 and is buried at at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France
