Family History

John James Spittlehouse was born in 1896 the son of William Thomas a colliery labourer and Elizabeth Ann Spittlehouse and the brother of Charles William, Elsie Elizabeth, Walter Henry and Edith May Spittlehouse. In 1911 they lived at 14 Tennyson Street Kirkby in Ashfield. Walter Thomas was born in 1870 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Elizabeth was born in 1873 at Huthwaite, they were married in 1892 and had 8 children, 3 died in infancy or early childhood.

Military History

Private John James Spittlehouse enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Kirkby in Ashfield, he initially served with the service number 13464 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
