He was born in 1883 in Horsleydown London and was the son of James a general labourer and Eliza Sculpher née Crouch. His father was born in 1859 in Norfolk and his mother Eliza Crouch was born in 1855 in Ware, Herfordshire they were married on 17th November 1878 at St Johns Church Horsleydown, Southwark . They had 4 children , James b1878, London Eliza b1880 Kent, Robert b1883 London and Alice born 1885 London. He was the husband of Fanny Sculpher nee Paling they were married in 1910 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District and in 1911 they lived at 21 Coppice Road High Fields Aldwick le Street near Doncaster.

Military History

Robert was a serving soldier when war broke out , he had served in the army with the Lincolnshire Regiment since the turn of the century in 1900. With his battalion he formed the British Expeditionary force landing in France on 13th September 1914, he was reported wounded and missing and was then confirmed killed in action on 1st November 1914. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium
