John Arthur Hall was born in 1886 the son of William a colliery deputy and Ellen Hall née Street, of 27 Churchill Cottage, Church Hill, Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. William was born in 1857 at Church Greasley, Ellen Street was born in 1854 at Newhall, married on 11th September 1877 at Church Greasley, they went on to have 9 children John Arthur married Burmah Morrell (born 13th January 1886) on 16th April 1910 at the Parish Church at Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at 42 Station Street, Sutton in Ashfield and had a daughter Marjorie born 28th August 1914. In 1911 they lived on Tudor Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. Burmah later lived at 62 New Street Carcroft Doncaster. Commencing 9th July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week.
Corporal John Arthur Hall enlisted on 31st May 1915 at Mansfield giving his age as 29 yrs and 237 days, he was a coal miner and his next of kin was his wife Burmah. He was posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and joined them on 1st June 1915 at their barracks at Winchester. Promoted Lance Corporal on 5th November 1915 and Corporal on 17th August 1916 he embarked from Southampton on 7th October 1916 and disembarked the following day at Le Harve. Reported missing on 21st October 1916 subsequently reported as killed in action on that day. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
