Family History

Sidney Stewart Franks was born in 1895at Nuncargate the son of James a coal miner contractor and Hannah Franks née Stewart and the brother of Hilda Nellie, James Edwin, George, Cyril, Ethel May and Jack Stewart Franks. James was born in 1863 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Hannah Stewart was born in 1872 at Leicester, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 7 children. In the 1911 census the family lived at Portland Villas Nuncargate Road Kirkby in Ashfield. James 48 yrs a coal miner contractor is living with his wife Hannah 39 yrs born in 1872 at Coleorton, Leicestershire, and their children, Hilda 18 yrs, James 17 yrs a clipper, Sidney Stewart a pony driver coal miner, George 15 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Cyril 13 yrs, Ethel May 11 yrs and Jack Stewart 8 months old.

Military History

Private Sydney Franks, enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, served with C Company, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and went to France on 3rd May 1915. Killed in action on 23rd July 1915 whilst on digging fatigues at the Yser canal bank near Ypres, Belgium. He is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery CI.6
