Family History

George Henry Huffen was born in 1888 the son of Joseph a colliery fireman and Jane Huffen née Lee of Kirkby in Ashfield. Joseph was born in 1850 and Jane Lee was born in 1851 both were born in Kirkby in Ashfield, married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district. they went on to have 8 children, in 1911 the family lived at 116 Church Hill, Kirkby in Ashfield George married Mercy Elizabeth Edge on 26th December 1913 at Hempsall, Suffolk Commencing 17th May 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week which was increased on 24th November 1918 to 32 shillings a week. Mercy married Edward Petty in 1919 and they lived at 1 Judd Cottages Cottemore Lane Walton on Thames Surrey.

Military History

Private George Henry Huffen, originally enlisted on 7th December 1905 in Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards. He was called up from the reserves at the outbreak of war landing in France on 6th October 1914 he died of wounds on 25th October 1914 and is buried in Ypres Town Cemetery A1.15

Article published in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times dated 20th November 1914:- “ANNESLEY WOODHOUSE PRIVATE KILLED. “Private G. H. Huffen, 1st Grenadier Guards has fallen victim to the war, death taking place on October 25th, from wounds received. He had served seven years and was called up from the reserves at the outbreak of hostilities. His parents lived on Church hill, and he had been married only a few months.
