George Louis Pendleton

George Louis (or Lewis) was the youngest son of Paul William and Katherine (or Catherine) Pendleton (née Needham). His father Paul William was born in Nottingham in 1864, the son of Thomas (b. Leicester) and Sarah Ann Pendleton. In 1881 Paul's family was living at 41 St James' Street, Nottingham; he was a joiner while his father and older brother Thomas were needlemakers. His mother Katherine Needham was born in Nottingham in about 1862. Paul and Katherine were married at Sneinton St Luke on 17 August 1882 and had seven children, six of whom survived infancy. All the children were born in Nottingham: Ethel Kate b. 1882, Percy William b. 1884, Beatrice Gertrude b. 1885 d. 1886 (J/F/M), Evelyn Gertrude b. 1887 (reg.J/F/M), Gladys Ivy b. 1892, George Louis b. 20 December 1896 (reg. 1897) bap. Nottingham St James 25 December 1898 and Annie Hilda b. 1898. With the exception of Percy and Beatrice who were baptised at Nottingham Christ Church, George's siblings were also baptised at St James. Paul and Katherine were living on St James' Street, Nottingham, when first married but had moved to 83 Independent Street, Radford, by 1885 when Percy and Beatrice were baptised. They were still at this address in 1891 with their three surviving children, Ethel (8), Percy (6) and Evelyn (4), Paul was now working as a needle maker. The family was living at 41 St James' Street, Nottingham, when George was baptised in 1898 and recorded on St James' Street on the 1901 Census. They were still at 41 St James' Street in 1911. Paul was a hosiery needle manufacturer (own account), Ethel a blouse designer, Percy a lace warehouseman, Evelyn a blouse maker and Gladys an engineer's clerk while George and Annie were still at school. Percy married Mary Ann Marshall in July 1913 and in 1939 they were living in Loughborough with their two children. The third surviving daughter, Gladys, died in 1921 aged 21. Paul and Katherine later moved to 9 Chaucer Villas, Chaucer Street, Nottingham, where Katherine died on 19 June 1939. Paul and his three unmarried daughters, Ethel, Evelyn and Annie, were living at the same address when the 1939 England & Wales Register was compiled. All three daughters were in work and Paul was recorded as a hosiery needle manufacturer. He died on 9 December 1942.
