Henry Burrows

Henry enlisted in Sutton in Ashfield on 7th December 1914, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 240 days and stated he was a coal miner and had been born in Radford and was living at Blackwell Road, Huthwaite . He served in the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters and his medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war in France on 14th July 1915. He posted as missing in action on 14th February 1916. (this was later confirmed to killed in action ) during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the southeast of Ypres, Belgium. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial

Notts Free Press – 3rd March, 1916. The War Office has refused to confirm the statement that Private Harry Burrows, 20508, 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, has been killed in action. The news was sent by a Sutton man in the same battalion that Burrows was blown up in the mining operation which overwhelmed his battalion. The particulars have, however, yet to be verified by the proper authorities
