Arthur was born in Rampton in 1892 and was one of five surviving children of Henry a building contractor and wheelwright and Mary Ann Bayes of Rampton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Laneham Street, Rampton Arthur and two of his brothers are living at home and two other siblings are living elsewhere. Arthur is 19 years of age single and a bricklayer.
Arthur enlisted into the Army at Mansfield and served with the 1/5th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers he served with them on the Western Front where he was killed in action on 14th November 1916. His body was never recovered and identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme. Pte Arthur Bayes Retford Times 22 Dec 1916 Above is a photo of Private Arthur Bayes, Northumberland Fusiliers, son of the late Hy. Bayes and Mrs Bayes of Rampton who was killed in action on Nov 14th. The deceased was 25 years of age and prior to the war was a bricklayer by trade. Mrs Bayes received a letter from the Rev J O Algwinby chaplain 119th Infantry Brigade stating that her son’s comrades wish them to convey their sincere sympathy and that they are the poorer for the passing of a real friend and true soldier and that she understands that his death was instantaneous. Mrs Bayes has two other son’s serving – Pte J W Bayes, Durham Light Infantry and Henry Bayes, Royal Engineers.
