Family History

Herbert William Slack was born in 1895 and was the son of the late Samuel Slack a publican and Elizabeth Slack née Bostock of Sutton in Ashfield, Samuel Slack was born in 1874 at Sutton in Ashfield, he died in 1902 aged 31 yrs, Elizabeth Bostock was born in 1870 at Ilkeston, married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. Following his fathers death his mother went on to re marry in 1905 at Mansfield to Harry Dove a hotel keeper, they live at 52, York St., Sutton-in-Ashfield, and had two children, Clarence Dove b1906 and Louis Dove b1910. In 1911 the family were living at King William Street, Bulwell, Nottingham Harry Dove is 37 yrs and a hotel keeper he is living with his wife Elizabeth Dove 41 yrs and his step son Herbert 15 yrs who is assisting in his step fathers business.

Military History

Private Herbert Slack enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, Nottingham, he served with 'C' Coy 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 27th September 1916 and is buried at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France.
