Joseph Saunders was born in 1891 at Morton the son of John a coal miner hewer and Sarah Saunders née Nuttall of "Lyndholme," Charnwood St., Alfreton Rd., Sutton-in-Ashfield and the brother of Diocleson Nuttall Saunders. John was born in 1865 at Brackenfield, Derbyshire, Sarah Nuttall was born in 1868 also at Brackenfield, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district, they had 2 sons. In 1911 the family lived at 15 Longden Terrace Sutton in Ashfield. John 46 yrs a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Sarah 43 yrs and their 2 sons, Diocieson Nuttall 22 yrs a coal miner loader and Joseph 20 yrs also a coal miner loader.

Military History

Private Joseph Saunders enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Sutton In Ashfield. He was killed in action on 17th August 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
