Family History

John George Radford was born in 1897 the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Sarah Radford née Goddard, and the brother of Mary Elizabeth,Kate, Emma and Samuel Radford of 9 Union Street Sutton in Ashfield. Joseph was born in 1857, Sarah Goddard was born in 1860 both were born in Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1880 their marriage was registered in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly two died in infancy. In 1911 the family were living at 9 Union Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Joseph is 54 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah 51 yrs and five of their children, John George is 14 yrs of age and a colliery labourer.

Military History

Private John George Radford, enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield he served with the 2/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 26th April 1917. He is buried in La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery, Peronne.
