Family History

Frederick was born in Retford in 1895 and was the only son of Alfred Thornhill a boot maker and Gertrude Mary Clark of Retford. he had a sister Olivia Mason Clark born in 1898. In the 1901 census the family are living at Mooregate Hill,Retford Frederick is 6 years of age. By the 1911 census his father Alfred has died leaving his wife shown as a widow , she is living with Frederick and Olivia at 39 Thrumpton Lane, Retford , Frederick is 17 years of age , single and a clerk working at the local rubber works.

Military History

Frederick enlisted in Retford and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment), his medal index card indicate that he first served in a theatre of war in France on 28th June 1915,he was killed in action on 17th October 1918 and is buried in Fresnoy-Le-Grand communal cemetery extension, Aisne, France grave reference B22.
