Fred Footitt was born in 1895 at Newark and was the son of Frederick a tailors cutter and Fanny Footitt née Gainsley of 2 Slaughterhouse Lane Newark His father Frederick was born in 1872 at Newark and his mother Fanny Jane Gainsley was born in 1872 at Holbeck, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1893 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Fred b1895, Harry b1897, Ada b1905 and Nelly. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Slaughter House Lane, Newark and are shown as Fred 39 yrs a tailors cutter, he is living with his wife Fanny 39 yrs and their children, Fred 16 yrs a labourer, Harry 15 yrs a labourer, Ada 6 yrs a scholar and Nelly 2 yrs.
Private Fred Footitt enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 18th August 1915 and died of wounds on 21st March 1916, he is buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France
His brother Private Harry Footitt enlisted at Newark and served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 27th March 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Article published 15th April 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Elder son of Mr & Mrs Footitt, Slaughterhouse Lane, Newark. Attended Christ Church school before working for Messrs. Quibell Bros. Then in the office of the Newark Gas Co. Enlisted in Territorials after outbreak of war. Spent 21st birthday (Dec. 10th 1915) in the trenches.
