George Edmund Harold Coulsey was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of George Henry Coulsey a cab driver and Lizzie Coulsey née Stanfield of 1 St Marks Place, St Marks Lane Lane, Newark. His father George Henry was born in 1873 at Stamford, Lincs and his mother Lizzie Stanfield was born in 1872 at Newark, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district. They went on to have the following children, George Edmund Harold b1897, David Stanley b1903, Edward Willis b1907 and Eleanor b1910 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 St Marks Place, St Marks Lane, Newark and are shown as George Henry 38 yrs a cab driver, he is living with his wife Lizzie 39 yrs and their children, George Edmund 14 yrs a fruiters errand boy, David Stanley 8 yrs a scholar, Edward Willis 4 yrs and Eleanor 1 year of age.
Private George Edmund Harold Cousley enlisted at Newark and initially served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France in May 1916 and was killed in action whilst serving with the 14th battalion Highland Light Infantry. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Pas de Calais France.
Article published 13th September 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of George Henry Coulsey, 1 St. Marks Place, St. Marks Lane, Newark. A former drummer in the Church Lads Brigade. Enlisted on the occasion of Cpl. Upton, VC, visit to Newark, in the 8th Sherwood Foresters. Later transferred to Highland Light Infantry. Went to France early in May and was killed after only a short while at the front.
