Robert Robinson was born John Robert Robinson in 1895 at Shelton and was the Son of Charles William a groom and gardener and Jane Robinson née Tyson of 6 Warburton Street, Newark. His father Charles William was born in 1862 at Binbrook, Lincolnshire and his mother Jane Tyson was born in 1867 in Lincolnshire, they were married on 27th January 1884 at Louth and went on to have the following children, Charles William b1884 Louth, Elizabeth b1886 Spital, George Enoch b1890 Newark, Minnie b1893 Sibthorpe, John Robert b1895 Shelton, Ernest b1898 Shelton, Christine b1900 Shelton and Kathleen b1902 Shelton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Shelton village near Newark and are shown as Charles 49 yrs a groom and gardener he is living with his wife Jane 45 yrs and their children, John (Robert) 16 yrs a farm servant, Ernest 13 yrs a scholar, Christine 11 yrs a scholar and Kathleen 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Robert Robinson enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 262 days, he was a gardener and his next of kin was his father Charles William he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 29th July 1915 and was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 20th March 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Charles William & Jane Robinson, 6 Warburton Street, Newark. Prior to his enlistment he was employed as gardener to Mr Hole, Balderton. Enlisted on the 31st August, 1914 and after six months training was drafted to France, where he has remained ever since. Reported missing on May 3rd, 1917 at Fontaine and presumed dead in February 1918. His younger brother, Pte. E. Robinson, is now in Leicester Royal Infirmary recovering from a severe wound in the right side of his face. He enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters on the 25th May, 1916 afterwards serving in Ireland and later France , where he was seriously wounded on Nov. 25th at Ypres. His father Charles had served in the Army he served in the Lincolnshire Regiment serving from 18th November 1880 until 17th November 1892 having served 12 yrs with the colours.
