Family History

Leonard Teece was born in 1897 at Hucknall and was the son of Philip a coal miner and Annie Teece née Holland of 57 Clumber Street, East Kirkby His father Phillip was born in 1871 at Dalrey, Staffordshire and his mother Annie Holland was born in 1875 at Unstone, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 4 children sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Leonard b1897 Hucknall, James William b1899 Hucknall and Frank b1909 Kirkby. In the 1911 census the family lived at 60 Milton Street Kirkby in Ashfield Nottinghamshire and were shown as Phillip 40 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Annie 36 yrs and their children Leonard 14 yrs a brick maker, James William 12 yrs a scholar and Frank 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Leonard Teece enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Kirkby in Ashfield, he served with the 6th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. His first theatre of war was the Balkans where he entered on 18th July 1915 and he was killed in action on 9th August 1915 at Gallipoli, his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

His brother John William Teece enlisted on 12th January 1915 at Nottingham, he gave the false age of 19 yrs and 4 months ( he was born in 1899) he gave his occupation as a coal miner and his address as Forest Street, Kirkby in Ashfield. Posted as a gunner into the Royal Field Artillery he reported to the Depot at Newcastle upon Tyne on 13th January 1915 and was posted to 3rd battery Royal Field Artillery on 10th May 1915. However his true age was eventually discovered and he was discharged from the army on 24th September 1915 , having made a misstatement as to his age on enlistment.
