He was born in 1892, the son of Elwyn James and Mary Hannah Cocking. He had four younger siblings; Albert, Annie, Elsie May and John Percy Cocking. In 1901 Elwyn, a cabinet maker, his wife, children, William (9), Albert (7), Annie (6), Elsie M. (1) together with his widowed mother in law, Ann F. Gale (69), lived at 166 Kirkewhite Street, Meadows, Nottingham. By 1911 Elwyn and his wife with their five children, now including, John Percy (5), were living at 190 Blackstone Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
He served in France from 25 February 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
