Son of John and Lucy Rossington, of West St., Retford; husband of Mrs. F. R. Rossington, of 8, White Hall Rd., Retford (CWGC).
1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) John Rossington was shot and killed on 30 July 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, Belgium.
John's younger brother, Richard, served in the 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (305312 Lance Corporal) was killed on 14 March 1918 (see record on this Roll of Honour). Pte John Rossington Retford Times 6 August 1915 'Official intimation was received on Wednesday of the death of Pte John Rossington of the 8th Sherwood Foresters (TF), who was killed in action last Friday. He was on silent patrol duty at the time. Deceased’s father is the Corporation steam roller driver and his wife is at the moment in ill health. Pte Rossington has three brothers serving in His Majesty’s forces, they are:- Corp W Rossington who has been wounded and only returned to his regiment, the 8th Sherwood Foresters, on Tuesday last: Sergt D Rossington and Pte Richard Rossington, who is also with the ‘Terriers.’ Pte John Rossington Retford Times 27 August 1915 'The above is a portrait of the late Private John Rossington of the 8th Sherwood Foresters, son of Mr And Mrs John Rossington of Retford, a report of whose death whilst in action in France was reported in our issue of 8th August. Private Rossington was shot through the head whilst out on a listening post on Friday July 29th.' Retford & Worksop Herald and North Notts Advertiser, 14 September 1915 (extract): ‘Honour to the Fallen. John Rossington, Percy Scott, Ernest King, Arthur Phillipson and JD Hilton have been killed in France or Belgium, and Frank Stockdale was drowned in the Aegean Sea when the King Edward transport was torpedoed. Percy Scott, Ernest King, Frank Stockdale and Arthur Phillipson, were regular in their attendance at S.
