Family History

John was the son of Joseph Henry a farmer and Ada Mary Harrison of Morton Retford. He was the brother of Joseph, George, Gerald and Mona Harrison. In 1911, they lived at North Road, Barmby Moor. In 1911, the family lived at Retford but John Harrison did not appear on the census.

Military History

John enlisted in Driffield. His first theatre of war was in Egypt where he arrived on 10th November 1915. He died of enteric fever at the Citadel Hospital Cairo, Egypt and is buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery F.63 Corpl John Harrison Retford Times 26 May 1916 Mr and Mrs J H Harrison, Moreton, Retford, will receive the sympathy of many friends in the death of their son, Corpl John Harrison 1st / 1st East Riding (Yorkshire) Yeomanry Regiment who passed away on the 17th inst. at the Citadel Hospital, Cairo, Egypt, suffering from enteric fever. Deceased was educated at Torworth, Babworth and finally at King Edward V1 Grammar School, Retford. He afterwards took a post in the London Joint Stock Bank, Market Weighton, where by his straight forward and genial personality he won many friends and where he made promise of a successful career. He passed the Bankers Institute examination in all subjects. A few months before the commencement of the war, he joined the East Riding (Yorks) Yeomanry and sailed with the regiment to Egypt on Oct 27 last. He attained his 21st birthday on April 8th last on which occasional was made full Corporal and received the congratulations of his officers and comrades with whom he was a great favourite. His manly conscientious and clean life endeared him to all with whom he came in contact and this cutting short of a most promising career is deeply deplored
