Family History

Roland was born in 1890 and baptised on 17th July 1890 at Woodlesford Parish Church. He was the son of William Thomas a gentleman farmer and Emma Sissons. They had three sons William Wyrill, George Reginald and Roland Edward. In 1901, Roland was a boarder at the King Edward VI Grammar School, Retford. By 1911, he had become a dental student living with his widowed mother Emma and brother William Wyvilll at Waterloo Manor, Garforth, Leeds. His effects of £899/3s were left to William Wyrill Sissons a surveyor (his brother) [Probate Wakefiled 11/10/1916].

Military History

He was Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 29th August 1914 and went to France on 16th April 1915.Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France Grave Reference: E 38.Lieut Roland Sissons Retford Times 9 June 1916'We regret to announce the death of a former Retford Grammar School pupil in the person of Lieut Roland Sissons who so often distinguished himself at the athletic sports at the Grammar School. He was the son of Mrs Sissons of Waterloo Manor, Garforth, Leices. On the outbreak of war, the deceased officer, who was a student at the Leeds Medical School, received a commission in the West Yorks, Regt and had seen over six months service at the front. From a letter by the Colonel, it appears the gallant officer was killed while sleeping in his tent, which was struck by a high explosive shell. The body however, received no external wound.'
