George was born in 1884 the son of Thomas Abbott, an engineering mechanic and Sarah Abbott. of "Oaklands", Stevenage, Hertfordshire. In 1901, the family lived at The Square, Retford. By the 1911 census George lived with Ernest Jenkins and family and living at Conagley, Russell Avenue, St Albans. George’s estate of £111/8s/5d was left to his father (Probate London 17/2/1919).
He is buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No 2 , Hebuterne, Pas-de-Calais, France Grave Reference: IV G 30
The following article is taken from the 'In memoriam' section of the 'Retfordian' magazine which was an in house publication of the King Edward VI Grammar School, Retford :- George Abbott, lieutenant 1st Bedfordshire regt, who was a great favourite with his school fellows in the late 90's was killed in action on August 23rd at Achiet-le-Petit. After taking his degree at Wadham College, Oxford, he entered the teaching profession, and was for several years a valued member of staff of St Alban's School, where he was editor of the school magazine and an officer in the O.T.C. His commanding officer wrote:- " he behaved magnificently in action and set an example to his men of which we are all very proud.
