Family History

Walter Suter was born in 1890 at Southwell and was the son of the late William A general labourer and Annie Suter née Hayes of Southwell. His father William was born in 1860 in Southwell and died in 1900 also at Southwell he was 39 yrs of age , his mother Annie Hayes was born in 1867 at Farnsfield, they were married in 1885 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born at Southwell, John b1886, Walter b1890, Elsie Sarah b1894, Bertha b1896 , Ellen b1899. His mother re married in 1908 at Southwell to Robert Hancock and lived at Bradfield's Cottages, Easthorpe, Southwell. In the 1911 census his mother and siblings are living at Kirklington Road, Southwell with his stepfather and are shown as Robert Hancock 31 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Annie Hancock 44 yrs and her children, Elsie Sarah Suter 17 yrs a lace mender, Bertha Suter 14 yrs and Ellen Suter 12 yrs . In the same 1911 census Walter has left the family home and is lodging at Moorbridge Lane, Stapleford, Nottingham, he is shown as being 21 yrs , single and a general labourer born at Southwell, he is boarding with Robert Foster 66 yrs a pit banks labourer and his wife Sarah Ann Foster 64 yrs and their family. Walter marries his wife Annie Shilcock in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration district, they lived at Norwood Fields, Southwell. They went on to have a daughter Florence born 1915 , her birth was recorded in the Shardlow Registration District.

Military History

Sergeant Walter Suter enlisted and initially served with the service number 63205 in the Durham Light Infantry, he later transferred to the 7th Company of the Labour Corps. He died at Military Hospital at York on 12th December 1918 and is buried at Southwell Minster (St. Mary) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire.
