Family History

Walter was born in Retford in 1893 and was the son of Walter a timber loader working for the Great Northern Railway and Eleanor Holey, of 54, Albert Rd., Retford. Walter (junior) had 3 older sisters , Emily, Margaret and Edith. In the 1911 census the family are living at 54 Albert Avenue, Retford, Walter (junior) is 17 years of age and like his father his occupation is that of timber loader working for the Great Northern Railway.

Military History

Walter enlisted in Retford and served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He went with his battalion to Gallipoli arriving there on 18th July 1915 (medal index card ) He was there less than a month when he was killed in action. He has no known grave and therefore his name is commemorated on the Helles memorial , Gallipoli, Turkey. Cpl Walter Holey Retford Times 12 Jan 1917 Corpl Walter Holey, son ao Mr and Mrs Holey54 Albert Road, Retford enlisted on 30th Aug 1914 in the 6th Lincolns and went out to the Dardanelles on the 1st July 1915. He participated in the Lincolns glorious work there and was killed on Aug 9th 1915. His parents, however, only received the official intimation a fortnight ago – sixteen months after his death. Prior to enlisting, deceased, who was 23 years og age, was employed as a timber loader in the G. N. Railway.
