Family History

George Taylor was born in 1895 at Plumtree he was the son of William a railway platelayer and Mary Taylor née Astill of Plumtree. William was born in 1859 at Plumtree, Mary Astill was born in 1858 at Normanton, they were married on 26th January 1880 at Plumtree parish church, they went on to have 11 children. In 1911 George has left the family home, he is living at Town End, Plumtree he is shown as being 16 yrs of age and a stable lad, he is living with his widowed uncle George Fisher 64 yrs a farm labourer

Military History

Private George Taylor enlisted and served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Landing in France on 2nd March 1915 he was discharged from the Army on 26th March 1919 and died from Tuberculosis on 31st January 1921 he is buried at Plumtree Church yard.

Extra Information

George Taylor’s name was originally omitted from Plumtree War Memorial as he died after it was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday 9th January 1921. His name was added in 2014 in time for a re-dedication service conducted by Revd Trevor Kirkman.
