Frank Costall was born at Radcliffe on Trent, he was baptised on 1st April 1894 at St Peters Church, Tollerton, he was the son of William a farm labourer and Ellen Costall née Whittaker of The Green, Plumbtree. William was born in 1851 at Gelston, Lincolnshire, Ellen Whittaker was born in 1852 at Shelford, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have 6 children. In the 1911 census Frank was living with his father and sister at The Green, Plumbtree, his father William 60 yrs of age is a farm labourer, he is living with his son Frank 18 yrs, a farm labourer, also living at the address is his sister Mary 15 yrs of age, his mother Ellen on the same 1911 census is living with her married daughter Lucy Hannah Dawn and her husband at Whatton.
Frank Costall enlisted on 6 August 1914 and was aged 21 years 158 days and 5 feet 5 inches in height. He was sent to the 4th extra reserve battalion for recruit training. He was posted to the 1st battalion on 24 March 1915 as one of the replacements for the high losses of Neuve Chapelle. Frank was wounded during the Battle of Aubers, 9th May when the battalion attacked Rouge Blancs. Frank was one of 245 all ranks wounded on the day. His medical record shows - " Gunshot wound to the head. He died of wounds received in action at No1 General Hospital and was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
Franks brother Robert Costall also served in the Great War with the service number 100912 in the 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 7th November 1918 and is buried at Dorlers Communal Cemetery Extention, France, he was married and lived with his family at The Backyard, Stanley, Derbyshire Additional research and information Peter Gillings
