Horace was born in 1885 in Ryhill Yorkshire and was the son of Francis Richard a railway guard and Hannah Higgs, of Swiss Cottage, Babworth Park, Retford. Francis and Hannah had a large family of nine children, however only seven survived to 1911. On 14th June 1889 when Horace is 14 years and seven months of age he is appointed by the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway as an assistant goods clerk at Darnall Station, on 7th May 1900 he becomes a booking clerk at the station and on 9th November he becomes a booking clerk at Heath Station. In the 1901 census the family are living at Junction Terrace, Handsworth Woodhouse, Yorks. Horace is 16 years of age and a railway clerk. On 14th October 1910 he marries his wife Maggie Dakin who comes from Sheffield at St Thomas Crock's Church,Sheffield By the 1911 census Horace and his wife Maggie are living as newly weds at 74, Mona Rd., Sheffield, Horace is 26 years of age and is working for the general Post Office as a sorting clerk and telegraphist . On 6th September their daughter Margaret is born.
Horace was called up for service on 27th July 1916 at Rotherham, he gives his address as 74 Mona Street, Sheffield , his age as 31 years and 7 months and his occupation as general post office clerk. Following his training he embarks from Folkstone to France on 9th December 1916 arriving at Boulogne on the same day. On 6th April 1917 he is wounded and returned to England where he is transferred to 2nd Northern General Hospital at Leeds and then onto Wakefield where on the 15th June 1917 is discharged. After some home leave he returns to France on 28th July 1917. He is killed in action on 12th April 1918, he has no known grave and therefore his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
