Ernest Hewitt

Ernest enlisted at Worksop on 11th December 1915 he gave his age as 18 years and 5 months and his address as Gateford Village, Worksop and his occupation that of farm horseman, he stated his religion to be Church of England and that his next of kin was his father Joseph Hewitt of South Leverton. He was placed to the reserves on 12th December 1915 where he remained until 16th January 1917 . He was mobilised on 17th January 1917 and by the 26th May 1917 was in the 14th division training reserve.On 2nd August 1917 he left Folkstone for Boulogne in France and he finally joined his battalion 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment in the field on 22nd September 1917. He came home on leave between 10th September 1918 and 24th September 1918 when he returned to France .On the 9th October 1918 he was promoted to Sergeant but only a week later on 17th October he was wounded by a gun shot wound to the head, causing a fractured skull. He died from these wounds on 5th November 1918 a week before the Armistice at 21 years of age. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France grave reference XLIX B 6
