Ernest Barnes was born on 2nd October 1891 at Ruddington he was the son of the late William a frame work knitter and Elizabeth Barnes née Buttery of Ruddington. William was born in 1847 at Ruddington, he died in 1897 aged 50 yrs, Elizabeth Buttery was born in 1849 at Basford, they were married in 1865 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 11 children. Ernest married Emma Smith (born 26th December 1891 ) on 11th February 1911 at St John’s Church, Buwell, they lived at 40 Bradford Street, Bulwell they had a son Ernest Winston born 24th June 1911. In the 1911 census they are living at 11 Turton Street, Bulwell, Ernest 20 yrs is a wagon greaser, he is living with his wife Emma 19 yrs of age they are boarding with Joseph Danby 26 yrs a dyers labourer and his family. Commencing 26th May 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Ernest Barnes enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell he served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He went to France on 17th August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, 4th November 1918, during the attack on the German line at Sebourg, France. Buried Sebourg British Cemetery, France. Row A, Grave 20.
