Walter Roland Allton was born in 1898 at Eastwood and was the youngest son of James a colliery horse keeper and Annie Stringer Allton née Shaw of 32 The Breach Eastwood Nottinghamshire. His father James was born in 1854 at Chapel End, Warwickshire, his mother Annie Stringer Shaw was born in 1854 at Bulkington, Warwickshire, they were married on 7th March 1876 at Ansley, Warwickshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Ann b1876, James b1878, Rueben b1880, Nellie b1882 and Mary Alice b1884 , they were all born in Ansley their remaining children were Joseph b1887, William b1890 and Rose b1892 who were all born in Greasley their other children Tom b1896 and Walter Roland b1898 were both born in Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 The Breach, Eastwood and are shown as James 57 yrs a coliery horseman he is living with his wife Annie 57 yrs and their children, William 20 yrs a coal miner hewer, Rose 18 yrs no occupation listed and Walter 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Walter Rowland Allton attested on 21st February 1916 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 4 months , his address as 32 The Breach, Eastwood and his occupation as that of a coal miner. His next of kin was his father James of the same address. He was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 29th April 1918 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 17th August 1918 where he was posted to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was reported missing 18/9/1918 following an attack on Gauche Wood and later confirmed as killed in action on that date and is buried at at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, Nord
