Family History

William Ball was born in 1882 at Giltbrook he was the son of Richard Ball a farmer and Sarah Ann Ball née Tomlinson of Toad Hole, Selston. Richard was born in 1854 at Greasley Sarah Ann Tomlinson was born in 1860 at Loughborough, they were married in 1881 at Barnsley they had two further children, John b1881, Giltbrook and Richard b1886 at Giltbrook. In 1911 the family lived at Toad Hole Selston. Richard is 57 yrs and a farmer he is living with his sons John 30 yrs a general labourer, William 29 yrs a colliery labourer, and Richard 25 yrs a coal miner

Military History

Private William Ball enlisted at Bakewell, Derbyshire. He was killed in action, 9th October 1916, during the attack on the German positions at the Schwaben Redoubt, near Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme. Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
