William Albert Hailey was born in 1881 at Wolverhampton and was the son of James a farm labourer and Ann Hailey née Dolphin of Sick Lane, Yoxall, Burton on Trent. His father James was born in 1838 at Shreswbury Shropshire and his mother Ann Dolphin was born in 1847 atCardington, Shropshire, they were married in 1867 at Church Stretton and went on to have the following children, Tryphena b1868, Gertrude Alice b1870, Sarah Ann b1875, Florence b1877, William Albert b1881, Elizabeth b1884 and Andrew b1889. William Albert Hailey married his wife Edith Adelaide Holland on 9th August 1902 at Gedling , Nottingham, they had two children, Winifred Annie born 15th October 1903 at Whitwell and Constance born 18th May 1911 at Sneinton, Nottingham, the family were living at The Lodge, Hill House Southwell when William died , his widow Edith was granted a pension of 25 shillings and five pence commencing 5th August 1918 for herself and her two children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 18 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton and are shown as William Albert Hailey 29 yrs a chauffeur he is living with his wife Edith Adelaide 35 yrs and their daughter Winifred Annie 7 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Sick Lane, Yoxall, Burton on Trent and are shown as James 73 yrs , he is living with his wife Ann 64 yrs.
Private William Albert Hailey enlisted at Southwell on 2nd December 1915, he gave his age as 34 yrs and 3 months and his occupation as that of a chauffeur and mechanic his address was The Lodge, Hill House Southwell and his next of kin was his wife Edith Adelaide of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day. Mobilised for war on 16th February 1917 he was posted to the Spares Motor Transport, Army Service Corps and arrived at there depot Grove Park, London on 19th February. He embarked at Devonport on 28th September 1917 on the troopship Honorata, transhipped at Durban on 4th November 1917 onto the troopship Carolia and disembarked in Kilwa German East Africa on 13th November 1917. Following his arrival in Africa he soon became ill with malaria and after he was treated in hospital at Dar es salaam he was admitted to No. 3 British General Hospital at Nairobi on 17th January 1918 with measles and died at the hospital on 26th January 1918 of smallpox. He is buried at Nairobi South Cemetery Kenya.
