Edward Gent

Edward Gent was born in 1882 at Bagthorpe and was the son of Matthew, a colliery banksman, and Elizabeth Gent (née Belton). His father Matthew was born in 1850 at Bagthorpe and his mother Elizabeth Belton was born in 1849 at Loughborough, They were married in 1876, the marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district. They had six children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were John Henry b1880, Edward b1882 and Sarah Ann b1886 who were all were born in Bagthorpe. Edward Gent married Julia Sarah Povey in 1906; the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They had two daughter Dorien Jessie born 6th July 1907 and Kathleen born 13th November 1914 who died on 6 February 1926 aged 11. In the 1911 census they were living at Bagthorpe village and were shown as Edward 28 yrs a shop assistant with the Co-Operative Society, who was living with his wife Julia 30yrs and their daughter Dorien Jennie 3 yrs. Their second daughter Kathleen was born three years later in 1914. In 1911 census Edward's parents were living at Bagthorpe and were shown as Elizabeth 62 yrs married, who was living with her son John Henry 31 yrs a a colliery banksman. Her husband Matthew was still living and presumably living with them; Elizabeth completed the census form on his behalf. The later CWGC record gives their address as Holly Bush Cottage, Bagthorpe, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. Edward made a Will and Probate was proven on 22nd August 1917 in Nottingham and shows him as Edward Gent of Bagthorpe, Private in H.M. Army died 25th April 1917 in France. Probate was awarded to Julia Sarah Gent, widow. Effects £235. His widow Julia was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week commencing 12th November 1917. The CWGC record gives her address as 78 Wilford Grove, Meadows, Nottingham.
