Family History

William Prothero was born 1893 and baptised on 29th May 1898 at Ironville the son of John James a colliery labourer and Elizabeth Prothero née Smith of Back Lane, Jacksdale. John James was born in 1863 at Ironville, Elizabeth Smith was born in 1869 also at Ironville, married on 8th January 1890 at Ironville and went on to have 9 children, 2 of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their children were John Thomas b1891,Henry b1892, William b1893, Samuel b1897, George b1900, Marion b1907 and Archie Prothero b1909 all were born in Codnor Park. In 1911 the family lived at Back Lane Jacksdale Nottinghamshire and were shown as John James a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth and their children, John Thomas a colliery banksman, Henry a coal miner hewer, William 17 a coal miner ganger, Samuel a coal miner ganger George a scholar, Marion and Archie.

Military History

Private William Prothero enlisted at Eastwood, he initially served with the service number 64826 in the 3rd battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the 9th battalion Norfolk Regiment when he was killed in action on 8th October 1918, he is buried at Montbrehain British Cemetery, France, grave reference A.21
