Family History

Leslie England was born in 1899 in Mansfield and was the son of William, a newspaper printer, and his first wife the late Florence England née Tunnicliffe. His father William was born in 1873 in Long Eaton and his mother Florence Tunnicliffe in 1875 at Hyson Green, they were married in 1898 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children , Leslie b1899 and Harold b1908 , his mother Florence died in 1908 in Nottingham she was 33 yrs of age. In 1911 census the family are living at lived at 8 Bastion Street Radford (and later 71 Independent Street Radford Nottingham and are shown as William 38 yrs head of the family married and a newspaper printer, Grace 24 yrs wife born 1887 Spalding and a greengrocer, living with them are children Leslie 12yrs a scholar Harold 3 yrs and Jessie 3 months, William and Grace appear to be living as man and wife , they state on the 1911 census they have been married a year and have had 1 child (Jessie 3 months ) no marriage can be found within the year proceeding the census on the bdm index, however in 1914 a Maud Mabel Grace Michelson does marry William England and it is believed this is their marriage, they go on to have further children, William in 1913 Charles in 1914 and Edward in 1916.

Military History

Private Leslie England, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 3rd May 1918 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.

In memoriam published 3rd May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ENGLAND. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. L. England, died of wounds in France May 3rd, 1918. One year has passed, our hearts still sore, as time goes on we miss him more. – Sorrowing dad, mam, and children. “ENGLAND. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. L. England, died of wounds May 3rd, 1917.
