Family History

James Alfred Cripwell was born in 1896 and was the son of Herbert and his first wife Charlotte Cripwell née Disney. They lived at Wilford House Stables, Wilford, Nottingham. His father Herbert was born in 1865 in Ruddington, his wife Charlotte Disney was born in 1865 in West Hallam, Derbyshire. They were married in 1884; the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area. They went on to have 8 children :- Ruddington, Samuel Thomas b1885 Ruddington, Annie b1887 Ruddington, Herbert b1889 Ruddington, William 1891 Ruddington, Cyril 1893 Ruddington, James Alfred b1896 Ruddington, Phyllis Emily b1899 Wilford and Robert Henry b1901 Wilford. His mother Charlotte died in 1904 aged 38 yrs and his father remarried in 1906 to Ruth Parkes (b 1866 Stoke Bardolph). In the 1911 census the family are living at Clifton Lane Wilford and are shown as Herbert 46 yrs a domestic coachman, who is living with his second wife Ruth 45 yrs and his children Samuel Thomas 26 yrs a printer, Cyril 18 yrs a printer, James Alfred 14 yrs a printer, Phyllis Emily 12 yrs a school girl and Robert Henry 10 yrs a school boy.

Military History

James Alfred Cripwell enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. James landed in France on 4th August 1915 and was killed in action during the 'Battle of the Dunes' on 10th July 1917. His death was not confirmed until March the following year. He is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial.

Extra Information

His brother Cyril enlisted on 7th April 1915 in Nottingham when he was 22 yrs of age. He served in the Manchester Regiment and was discharged from the Army on 25th February being no longer physically fit for war service. A notice published 30th March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CRIPWELL. - Missing since July 10th, 1917, now presumed dead, Pte. James Alfred Cripwell, of Wilford (Northern), aged 21 years.
