Family History

William Beardsley was born in 1883 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Walter an iron turner and Mary Beardsley néé Peak of 18 Rushton Terrace, Northville Street, Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1856 at Nottingham, he died in 1896 aged 41 yrs his mother Mary Peak was born in 1855 also at Nottingham, they were married on 10th March 1877 at St Peters Church, Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Emily b1878, Walter b1881, William b1883, Elizabeth b1886, James b1888, Ellen b1890, Alfred b1893 and Ada b1895 all were born in Nottingham. William married his wife Alice May Lloyd (born 10th January 1884) in 1907 at Nottingham, they lived at 6 Berkley Street, Nottingham and had a son William Harry born 4th February 1909. In the 1911 census the family lived at 23 Radnor Street, Nottingham and were shown as William Beardsley 28 yrs a guillotine cutter in a printers, he is living with his wife Alice May 27 yrs a 'maker up' and their son William Henry 2 yrs of age, also living with them at this time is Alfred Beardsley 19 yrs a shearing cutter (his brother) In the same 1911 census, his widowed mother Mary is living on her own at 18 Rushton Terrace, Northville Street, Nottingham, she is shown as Mary 56 rs a widow and a charwoman. Following his death his widow Alice was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 1st October 1917 and was raised to 21 shillings and 3 pence a week from 4th December 1918.

Military History

Private William Beardsley, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 25th January 1917. [1] He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. [1] The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives his date of death as 15th January 1917. All other sources agree that it was 25th.

A day of remembrance sad to recall. – From wife Alice, son Harry. “BEARDSLEY. – In living memory of our dear brother William, killed in action January 25th, 1917. A supreme sacrifice. – From loving sisters and brothers, Lizzie, Ada, Jim, and Alf., brother-in-law Alf. (in France). “BEARDSLEY. – In loving memory of our dear son-in-law, William, killed in action January 25th, 1917.
