Samuel Edwin Hardy was born in 1887 the son of George Langley Hardy and Mary Hardy (née Garton). His father was born in 1855 iat Little Hale, Lincolnshire his mother in 1858 iat Nottingham. Married in 1877 at Nottingham, they had the following children - Edith Mary b.1879, Ellen Lavinia b.1880, Florence b.1884, Samuel Edwin b.1887 and Elsie Gertrude b.1902. In 1911, the family was living at 5 Manchester Street, Nottingham. George was a shop assistant and Ellen Lavinia a lace mender. Samuel Edwin married Gertrude Farrell at Nottingham in 1912 they lived at 13 Flojambe Terace, Lamatine Street, Nottingham
