Arthur Brownlow was born in 1895 at Claraborough, he was the son of William a leather dresser and Ada Brownlow née Wood and the brother of Florrie and William Brownlow. William was born in 1873 at Lenton, Ada Wood was born in 1870 at Radford, they were married on 1st April 1893 at Christ Church, Radford, they went on to have 4 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 35 Ronald Street Radford Nottingham, William was 38 yrs and a leather dresser, he is living with his wife Ada 41 yrs and their 3 children including Arthur 1 6 yrs a lace manufacturer fitter. .
Lance Corporal Arthur Brownlow, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), died of wounds on 19th November 1916. He is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 19th November 1917 :- “BROWNLOW. – In loving memory of my dear son, L.-Cpl. Arthur Brownlow, 92, Denman-street, died of wounds November 19th, 1916. A light is from our household gone, a voice we loved is still, a place is vacant in our home which never can be filled. The hardest part is yet to come, when the heroes all return, when we miss among the smiling crowd the face of my dear son. – From mother, father, sister, and brother. “BROWNLOW. – In loving memory of Lance-Corporal Arthur Brownlow, died of wounds November 19th, 1916. CWGC cites 19/11/1916 as date of death UKSWD as per memorial. The 1911 Census cites Clarborough as his place of birth but Free BMD has him registered in Nottingham.
