Family History

John William Stevenson was one of eight children born to George and Kate Stevenson (nee Wilkinson) in 1897 at Clarborough, near Retford. The parents had also been born in Clarborough and had married there in 1893 where George earnt his living as a wheelwright. The other seven siblings were all born in in Clarborough, them being, George Henry born 1885, John William 1897, Tom 1899, Agnes1902, Elsie 1904, Nellie 1906, Frances 1910 and Albert born 1912.

Military History

Pte John William Stevenson Retford Times 25 May 1917 The news of the fact that Pte John William Stevenson, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, son of Mr and Mrs Geo Stevenson of Clarborough, had been reported missing was received with much sorrow in the village of Clarborough, where the family are so well known and highly respected. Pte Stevenson before joining the Army a year ago last April was under gardener at Mr Jeffcock’s at Welham Hall. He is 20 years of age and went to France about the beginning of February and was reported missing between April 9th and 12th. He was the organ blower at Clarborough Church and had been connected with the choir and church all his life. He has a brother, Tom in a Cavalry Regiment. He is buried at Buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery 27.D.14.
