Family History

Edwin Ernest Berry was born in 1891 at Carrington and was the son of Samuel Richard a joiner and Emma Berry née Fenton of 8, Wesley Street, Carrington, Nottingham. His father Samuel Richard was born in 1855 at Carrington and his mother Emma Fenton was born in 1856 also at Carrington, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were , Millicent b1885, Mabel b1887,Edwin Ernest b1891, and Emma Gertrude b1896, all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Wesley Street, Carrington and are shown as Samuel Richard Berry 56 yrs a joiner, he is living with his wife Emma 55 yrs and their children, Millicent 26 yrs a lace mender, Edwin Ernest 20 yrs an apprentice plumber and Emma Gertrude 15 yrs a lace joiner.

Military History

Private Edwin Ernest Berry enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
