John Thorley (junior) was born in 1874 the son of John (senior) a domestic gardener and Sarah Ann Thorley,née Branson of Wollaton Nottingham. John (senior) was born in 1844 in Wollaton and his mother Sarah Ann Branson was born in 1845 in Long Clawson, Leicestershire. Married in 1864 at Radford, they had nine children - James b.1865, Mary b.1867, Charlotte b.1868, Henry b.1869, Eliza b.1872, John b.1874, Rachel b.1876, Albert b.1878 and Julia b.1879. In 1911, they lived at Wollaton. James was a colliery carter and Mary a lace hand. In 1911, John boarded at 46, Denison Street, Beeston with Charlotte Sykes (his sister).
John Thorley enlisted at Nottingham and served initially (7265) with the Army Vetinary Corps later transferring to the Lancashire Fusiliers. He landed in France on 10th May 1915 and died of pneumonia on 27th January 1917. He is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, Grave Reference: I H 5
