Family History

Lionel Roy Goater was born in 1887 the only son of Charles a printer and Sarah Goater, née Gilbert of Cranmer Street, Nottingham. Charles was born in 1845 at Nottingham, Sarah Gilbert was born in 1852 at Wolston, Warwickshire, they were married on 24th July 1872 , they had 3 children. In the 1911 the family are living at 3 St James Terrace, Nottingham, Charles is 66 yrs and a printer, Lionel Roy is 24 yrs, single and is assisting in his fathers business. Lionel Roy married Margaret Wheelhouse (born 27th May 1889) in 1915 at Nottingham they lived at 14, Exchange St., Retford, Nottingham and had a son John Roy born 2nd February 1918. Commencing 11th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 36 shillings and 8 pence a week.

Military History

Private Lionel Roy Goater enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Retford, he served with B battery, 255th brigade, Royal Field Artillery he was killed in action on 18th April 1918 and is buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref B.37)
