Family History

Ernest was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of Alfred and Emily Hannah Pape née Whittaker. His father Alfred was born in 1858 in Loughborough and his mother Emily Hannah Whittaker was born in 1855 in the Bath registration area. They were married in 1878 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children:- Emily b1881, Albert b883, Sissie b1885, John b1886, Harry b1887, Ernest b1889, Harvey b1890 and Wilfred b1896; all the children were born in Nottingham. His mother Emily died in Nottingham in 1896 aged 41 yrs. His father remarried in 1899 to Fanny Bonser (died 1927). In the 1901 census the family are living at 61 Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred 43 yrs head of the family and a foreman in a hosiery factory, he is living with his second wife Fanny 38 yrs and his children, Emily 20 yrs a hosiery worker, Albert 18 yrs a lever hand on the railway, Sissie 16 yrs a runner in a hosiery factory, John 15 yrs a shop assistant, Harry 14 yrs a book binder, Ernest 12 yrs a scholar and Harvey 11 yrs also a scholar. Another son, Wilfred, is at 20 Hartley Road, Radford, with his grandmother, Harriett Whittaker 70 yrs a widow, on the night of the census. In the 1911 census his father Alfred now 52 yrs head of the family, a foreman in a hosiery factory is living at Shearing Hill, Gedling, with his second wife Fanny 46 yrs. All the children have left the family home. In the same census we find Ernest now 22 yrs, single and working as a brewery bottler living as a boarder at 17 Bunbury Street, Nottingham with James Beardsley 25 yrs a hosiery worker and his family. Ernest's brother, Wilfred (15), is also a boarder at the same address. In 1913 (J/A/S) he is married in the Nottingham registration district to his wife Elizabeth Baxter. They had two children, William A Pape b. 1914 (A/M/J Nottingham) and Dorothy E. birth registered 1916 (J/F/M Nottingham). Elizabeth may have remarried as there is a record of the marriage of Elizabeth Pape to William Bailey, 1920 (A/M/J Nottingham).

Military History

Ernest enlisted and served with the Royal Engineers Railway Operating Division. He died of wounds at No 2 Eastern General Hospital, Brighton, on 17th November 1918 and is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref Screen Wall 03267).
