Percy Cordon was born in 1889 the son of Henry a railway contractor’s labourer and Emma Cordon (née Williams) . His parents married in 1889 and had five children - Percy b.1889, Ernest b.1890, John Henry b.1893, Grace b.1895 and Elsie May Cordon b.1899. In 1911, the family (including Percy and his wife Minnie) lived at 44, Chapel Street, Beeston. John Henry was a telephone mechanic, Grace a sewing machinist and Elsie May a scholar. Percy had married Minnie Heath on 14th January 1911 in Beeston. They went on to have two children , Winifred Emma born 3rd June 1911 in Beeston and Kathleen Grace born 12th November 1912. With effect from 23/7/1918, Minnie received a weekly pension of 25/5d for herself and two children.
Percy Cordon enlisted on 29th May 1915. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters. He first landed in France on 6th March 1916. He was wounded by a gun shot wound to the back on 5th August 1916 and was treated at the 1st Casualty Clearing Station. He was transferred back to England on 22nd August and was treated at the Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. After recovering, he returned to France 5th May 1917. He was serving with 8th Platoon, “B” Company, when killed in action on 6th December 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
In memoriam published 6th December 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CORDON. – In loving remembrance of my dear husband, Percy Cordon, 2/7th Sherwood Foresters, missing Dec. 6th, 1917, since reported killed on that date.
