Stanley Cecil Carrier

Stanley Cecil was the son of John and Sarah (nee Lowe). Both John and Sarah were born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and were married in 1869 (O/N/D Basford). They had six children, all of whom were born in Ilkeston: Samuel John (k/a John) b. 1870 (O/N/D Basford), William Lowe b. 1 February 1874 (J/F/M Basford), Ernest b. 1877 (O/N/D Basford), Stanley Cecil b. 1881 (birth registered 1882 J/F/M Basford), Ethel b. 1884 (O/N/D Basford) and Percy b. 1886 (A/M/J Basford). In 1871 John (29) and Sarah (27) were living at Market Place, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, with their son Samuel John (u/1 year). John, a draper, and Sarah had moved to Bath Street, Ilkeston, by 1881 and now had three sons, Samuel (10), William (7) and Ernest (3). The family was still living on Bath Street in 1891; John (49) was still working as a draper and his three eldest sons, Samuel (20), William (17) and Ernest (14) were working as draper's assistants. Sarah (47) and the three youngest children, Stanley (9), Ethel (6) and Percy (4), were also in the household on the night of the census. John reported on the 1911 Census that only five of his six children were still living, and it is likely that Ernest died aged 18 in 1896 (J/F/M Basford also recorded by the Derbyshire Registrar). In 1901 John (60) was working as a draper (shopkeeper) and living on Main Street, Shirebrook, Pleasley, Derbyshire. Living with him were two of his children, John (31), a draper's assistant, and Ethel (16) of no occupation. On the same census, his wife Sarah (57) was living on Main Street, Kimberley, and described as head of household. Living with her were Stanley (19) a draper's assistant, and Percy (14) a timber merchant's clerk. Also in the household was Sarah's sister, Marian Lowe (50) who was living on her own means. William had married Zillah Henshaw at South Street Wesleyan Chapel, Ilkeston, in 1899 (O/N/D Basford) and they were living independently. Sarah died before the 1911 Census by which time John was living on Main Street, Kimberley, and working for the Co-op Society as an outfitting assistant. Also in the household were Samuel (40) a draper ('at home'), Ethel (26) a draper (own account, 'at home'), Percy (24) a timber merchant's clerk and Ethel Kate Knight (23), John's niece, who was the family's housekeeper. Also in 1911, William (37), a draper, was living on High Street, Whitwell, Derbyshire, with his wife Zillah (35) who was assisting in the business, while Stanley, who had married Ada Anne (Annie) Lowe (b. Eastwood 1879) in 1908 (J/A/S Basford), was living at 7 Noel Street, Kimberley. Stanley (29) was still working as a draper. He and Ada (32) had one child, Ada Cecily k/a Cecily (u/1 month, b. 1911 A/M/J Basford). Also in the household on the night of the census was Gertrude Mirfin (35), a dressmaker, who was Stanley's married sister-in-law. Ada Annie Carrier died on 10 April 1915 aged 36. Their daughter Ada Cecily has not been traced after 1911.
