James Major was born in 1890 at Bulwell and was the son of John a brick layers labourer and Elizabeth Major née Savage of 2 Honey Place, Main Street, Bulwell His father John was born in 1862 in Bulwell and his mother Elizabeth Savage was born in 1866 in Green Norton, Northamptonshire, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, his mother Elizabeth brought two children to the marriage Ada Savage b1886 Bulwell and Percy b1888 at Bulwell. Following their marriage they went on to have a further 6 children, all born in Bulwell , James b1890, Florence b1894, William b1897, Gordon b1902, Jack b1906 and Eveline b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Honey Place, Main Street, Bulwell and are shown as John 49 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 45 yrs and their children Percy Savage 23 yrs a miner, Florence Major 17 yrs a cigarette maker, William Major 14 yrs a brusher, Gordon Major 9 yrs a scholar, Jack Major 5 yrs and Eveline Major 1 yr. In the 1911 census James has left the home address and was living with his aunt and uncle, Sarah and Thomas Rogers at 59 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse he is shown as being 21 yrs, single and a miner

Military History

Private James Major enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was wounded in action in France on 1st July 1916 during the battle of the Somme. He was evacuated to England but died at Napsbury War Hospital, St Albans, on 22nd July 1916. He was buried in Nottingham Northern Cemetery

Inscription on family headstone, Nottingham Northern Cemetery, Bulwell: 'In loving memory of Pte James Major (11th Sherwood Foresters) the beloved son of John & Elizabeth Major, wounded in action in France July 1st died at Napsbury War Hospital, St. Albans July 22nd 1916 aged 26 years. Duty nobly done. Also John (-) above, died October 31st (-) aged 77 years. Also Annie Elizabeth wife of the above. Reunited.'
