Family History

Charles , known as Charlie to his family and friends was born in Torpoint in Devon and was the son of George Frederick a game keeper and Ellen Young. His father was born in Coddington and his mother had been born in Torpoint, they had seven children in total , however one sadly died in infancy. Their children were ;- Fred George (b 1893 Colchester) Ethel (b 1896 Coddington) Charles (b 1898 Torpoint) May (b 1903 Coddington) Doris (b 1905 Coddington and Daisy (b 1910 Coddington) His father was a gamekpper employed at Coddington Hall by John S Thorpe and judging by the places of birth of his children the family moved often between Coddington and the South Coast. However as can be seen from the 1901 and 1911 census the family were settled at Stapleford Lane in Coddington. Following Charles death his mother lived at 28 Lombard Street Newark-on-Trent Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Charles enlisted in Newark and gave his place of birth as Devonport, Devon , and his residence as Coddington. He served as a corporal with the 2/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action on the night of the 31st October 1917 when in the Lens area. He is buried in Cabaret Rouge Cemetery, Souchez, France.
