Family History

Arthur was born in 1897 in Mansfield and was the son of Arthur an engineer and caretaker and Gertrude Warner née Hicking of Sanatorium Lodge, Ratcher Hill, Mansfield. Arthur snr was the caretaker at the lodge . The sanatorium eventually became Ransom Wood Hospital. His father Arthur senior was born at Hyson Green, Nottingham in 1872 and his wife Gertrude was born in 1874 in Nottingham , they were married in the Nottingham Registration district in September 1895 and went on to have three children , they were Arthur b1897, Robert Leonard b1898 and Elsie b1908, all the children were born in Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ratcher Hill Cottages, Mansfield and are shown as Arthur 37 yrs head of the family a engineer and caretaker, je is living with his wife Gertrude 37 yrs and their children, Arthur 14 yrs a painter and decorator, Robert Leonard 13 yrs a scholar and Elsie 3 yrs of age.

Military History

Arthur enlisted and served with D company 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters . It was with his battalion that he was sent to Dublin during the Irish Rebellion 1916. . On 27th April 1916 he was shot dead inside the nurses home in the South Dublin Union. He was buried in the Kilmainham Military Hospital Cemetery , County Dublin. He was one of the 31 men of the Sherwood Foresters who were killed during the Irish Rebellion 1916.

Extra Information

His brother Robert Leonard also enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters on 21st May 1916 at Mansfield, he served with the Sherwood Foresters and saw service on the Western Front between 6th March 1916 and 6th December 1916. After serving 1 yr and 339 days he was discharged being no longer fit for active service and survived the war. Article published 12th May 1916 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times :- “MANSFIELD SOLDIER KILLED IN IRELAND. “Private A. Warner, who has paid the supreme sacrifice in Ireland, only enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters on January 16th last, and was 19 years of age. By trade he was a decorator, and was an old King Edward school boy. He has a brother in the trenches, who went out. last May. “Mr. Warner has received the following letter from Captain J. S. Dale, of his son's company: – “I am very sorry that it is my duty to write and tell you of the death of your son, Pte. A. Warner, of my Company. He was shot through the heart whilst engaged in an attack on a house held by the rebels in Dublin. It will be some consolation for you to know that he behaved most gallantly, and has been specially mentioned for his bravery by the officer commanding the battalion.
